1. Fabric — Still the Foundation, But Here's What's Changed
The basics haven't shifted: 100% natural fibres are your best friend for tie-dye, and cotton is still the gold standard. It absorbs dye deeply, holds colour well, and gives you those crisp, satisfying results you see in photos.
But here's what I'd add in 2026 that I glossed over before:
Cotton weight matters more than most beginners realise. A lightweight cotton jersey (the kind used for t-shirts) will give you fluid, blended colour transitions. A heavier cotton like canvas or a thick tote bag will absorb dye more slowly and give you sharper edges and more defined white resist areas. Neither is wrong — they just produce different results, so choose based on what you're going for.
Rayon has had a moment in the tie-dye community over the last couple of years, and for good reason. It takes dye more deeply than cotton and produces incredibly jewel-toned, almost luminous results. If you haven't tried dyeing on rayon yet, pick up a rayon challis or rayon crepe — the colours are genuinely breathtaking.
What to avoid: Fabrics labelled "moisture-wicking," "easy care," or "wrinkle-resistant" almost always have synthetic finishes or polyester blends that resist dye. Check the label before you buy.
Pre-washing is non-negotiable. Wash your fabric without fabric softener before dyeing. Fabric softener leaves a coating that blocks dye absorption — it's one of the most common reasons beginners end up with patchy results.
2. Dye — More Options Than Ever, Here's How to Choose
This is the section I most wish I'd gone deeper on in the 2023 version. In 2026 there are genuinely more good options available, and the choice between them matters.
Fiber-Reactive Dye — Still the Best for Cotton
If you're dyeing cotton, rayon, linen or hemp, fiber-reactive dye is still the clear winner. It chemically bonds with the fabric fibre rather than just sitting on top of it, which means the colour is vibrant, wash-fast, and won't fade after a few washes the way cheaper dyes do.
The two brands I recommend and have used consistently:
Procion MX — the original fiber-reactive dye, used by serious crafters and textile artists. Comes as a powder you dissolve in water. The colour range is massive and the results are consistently excellent. If you're mixing custom colours, this is what you want.
Tulip One-Step — more beginner-friendly because the soda ash is already mixed into the dye formula. You don't need to do a separate soda ash soak, which saves a step. The colours are vivid and the kits come with everything you need to get started. Great for kids or for someone who wants to get straight to the dyeing without the chemistry prep.
Rit All-Purpose Dye — The Accessible Option
Rit is easier to find locally and doesn't require soda ash, which makes it a popular beginner choice. The results are slightly more muted than fiber-reactive dye on cotton, but on silk, nylon, or mixed-fibre items it can work beautifully. Rit also makes Rit DyeMore specifically for synthetics — if you're trying to dye polyester, that's the one you need.
What's New: Ice Dye and Low-Water Immersion
Two techniques that have really taken off since 2023 both use standard fiber-reactive dye but in unconventional ways. Ice dyeing involves placing ice on top of folded fabric and sprinkling dry dye powder directly over the ice — as the ice melts, it carries the dye in unpredictable, watercolour-like patterns. The results are stunning and genuinely unique every time. Low-water immersion involves cramming fabric into a small container with a little water and dye, creating intensely saturated, marbled results. Both are worth trying once you've got the basics down.
3. Soda Ash — The One Step People Still Skip
Nothing has changed here — soda ash is still essential for fiber-reactive dyeing and still the most skipped step by beginners who end up disappointed with washed-out results.
Soda ash (sodium carbonate) raises the pH of your fabric, which activates the chemical bond between the fiber-reactive dye and the cotton fibre. Without it, the dye will sit on the surface of the fabric, look fine when wet, and then rinse out significantly when you wash it.
How to use it:
Dissolve 1 cup of soda ash in 1 gallon of warm water. Soak your pre-washed, dry fabric for at least 15–20 minutes. Wring it out (don't rinse it) and it's ready to dye.
A few things I've learned since 2023:
- Temperature matters. Soda ash dissolves better in warm water, but you want it to be room temperature or just slightly warm — not hot — by the time you add your fabric. Very hot water can start to pre-react the soda ash in ways that reduce its effectiveness.
- You can also add soda ash directly to your dye. Some dyers skip the pre-soak and mix soda ash directly into the dye solution. This works, but it starts a "clock" — once soda ash is mixed with the dye, you have roughly 4 hours before the dye begins to exhaust. Keep this in mind if you're working on a big batch.
- Soda ash is not the same as baking soda. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate — a different compound with a lower pH that won't fix your dye properly. Make sure you're buying sodium carbonate labelled specifically as soda ash or washing soda.

4. Rubber Bands and Ties — More Options in 2026
Rubber bands are still the classic tool for creating resist patterns in tie-dye, but in 2026 there are a few additions worth knowing about.
Rubber bands work best for bullseye and spiral patterns. Use a variety of widths — thicker bands create wider white resist lines, thinner bands create finer lines. The key thing most people don't think about: twist the band multiple times before looping it back. A single loop often isn't enough tension to fully resist the dye, especially on heavier fabrics.
Sinew or waxed string has become popular for more intricate binding work. Unlike rubber bands, string lets you tie specific sections precisely and doesn't snap. It's especially useful for shibori-inspired patterns where the binding placement matters a lot.
Clamps and clips — wooden or plastic spring clamps from a hardware store — are having a moment in the tie-dye world for creating geometric patterns. Fold your fabric into a triangle or square, clamp both sides, and the clamped areas become your resist. The results are sharp, graphic, and very different from the soft organic look of rubber band spirals.
5. Gloves — An Upgrade Worth Making
I covered gloves briefly in 2023 but honestly undersold this one. The quality of your gloves matters more than people give it credit for.
Cheap, thin disposable gloves (the kind that come in bulk packs) have a tendency to tear mid-project, which is never fun when you're elbow-deep in magenta dye. They also make it harder to feel what you're doing when you're folding and manipulating wet fabric.
My current recommendation is nitrile gloves — specifically ones labelled "extended cuff" or "exam grade." They're thicker than standard disposable gloves, give you better dexterity, and the extended cuff keeps dye off your wrists when you're reaching into a dye bath or squeeze-bottling colour onto large fabric pieces. They're still disposable (or can be washed and reused a few times if you're careful), but they're significantly more durable than the ultra-thin options.
Avoid latex if you're working with others — latex allergies are more common than people realise, and nitrile performs just as well.
Pro tip: Keep two pairs on hand per session. When you're working with multiple colours and switching between them, swapping gloves between colours prevents the colour you had on your hands from contaminating your next dye bottle.
6. Squeeze Bottles — Get the Right Ones
The 2023 post covered squeeze bottles as a category but didn't get specific enough. After years of using different types, here's what I've found:
Narrow tip bottles (sometimes called applicator bottles or precision tip bottles) give you the most control — essential for getting dye into the folds of a bundled piece without flooding the whole thing. These are the ones you want for most tie-dye work.
Wide tip bottles are better for pouring large amounts of dye quickly — useful when you're doing a pour technique on something large like a tablecloth or bedsheet.
Size: 8oz (240ml) bottles are the most practical for most projects. Large enough to hold a good amount of dye, small enough to control. If you're doing a big batch, fill multiple bottles with the same colour rather than using one huge bottle — the pressure control is much better.
Clear vs. opaque: Clear bottles let you see exactly how much dye you have left and how well it's dissolved. Much easier to work with than opaque ones.
A set of precision tip applicator bottles is one of those small upgrades that genuinely changes how your work looks — it's worth buying a proper set rather than repurposing old ketchup bottles.
7. Mixing Containers and Measuring Tools
This is the section most beginners skip because it feels boring, and then they wonder why their results are inconsistent.
Plastic containers only — no metal bowls or cups. Metal can react with fiber-reactive dye and soda ash in ways that affect colour accuracy. Plastic is inert and easy to clean.
Measuring cups and spoons — keep a dedicated set for dye work. Once a measuring spoon has been used for dye, wash it thoroughly but don't put it back in your kitchen. I keep a small set of plastic measuring spoons specifically for my dye studio.
A kitchen scale is worth adding to your kit in 2026 if you don't already have one. Measuring dye powder by weight rather than by volume gives much more consistent results — especially when you're trying to replicate a specific colour from a previous batch.
Warm water access — you need warm (not boiling) water to dissolve dye powder properly. Undissolved powder creates blotchy spots where concentrated dry dye hits the wet fabric. Dissolve everything fully before it goes into a squeeze bottle.
8. Plastic Wrap and Workspace Protection
Unchanged from 2023, but worth re-emphasising because it's still the most-skipped step after soda ash.
Plastic wrap (cling film) is what you cover your bundled, dye-applied fabric with while it sits and the dye sets. It keeps the fabric moist — essential for the chemical bonding process — and prevents the dye from drying out before it has a chance to properly bond. A dry surface = washed-out colour.
Cover your work surface with heavy-duty bin bags or a plastic table cover before you start. Tie-dye dye is permanent and will stain wood, fabric table covers, and concrete. The setup takes 2 minutes and saves you a lot of grief.
Old towels and an apron round out your protection kit. Wear clothes you don't mind staining — even with gloves, some dye always finds a way.
9. A Drying Rack — Often Forgotten, Always Needed
You'll need somewhere to hang or lay your rinsed fabric while it dries. A foldable clothes drying rack or a plastic-coated wire rack works well — avoid wooden racks, which can absorb dye.
Dry in the shade, not direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade fresh dye before it has fully cured, especially if the fabric is still slightly damp. Once the fabric is fully washed out and dried the first time, sunlight is no longer a concern.
What's New in 2026: Three Things Worth Adding to Your Kit
Since the 2023 post, a few things have come onto my radar that I think are genuinely useful additions:
Urea — a humectant (moisture-retaining agent) you can dissolve in your dye water instead of plain water. Urea keeps the fabric surface moist for longer, which extends the dye-setting window. Especially useful if you live in a warm, dry climate where the plastic-wrapped fabric dries out faster than ideal. A standard ratio is 1 cup of urea dissolved per quart of warm water, replacing your plain water in the dye mix.
Synthrapol — a concentrated detergent designed specifically for washing out tie-dye after dyeing. It suspends loose, unfixed dye particles in the wash water so they rinse out instead of redepositing onto other parts of the fabric or bleeding into adjacent colours. Worth having a bottle on hand if you're doing multi-colour work and you want clean colour separation.
Colour catchers (laundry sheets that trap loose dye in the wash) — not a tie-dye supply exactly, but a genuinely useful thing to include in your first wash of a newly dyed piece. They catch excess dye that rinses out in the wash and prevent it from tinting other fabrics. I started using these consistently and the difference in how clean my finished pieces come out is noticeable.
Quick Starter Kit vs. Full Kit — What to Buy First
One of the most common questions I get: do I need all of this at once?
No. Here's how I'd break it down:
If you're trying tie-dye for the first time:
Start with a Tulip One-Step kit (comes with dye, squeeze bottles, rubber bands and gloves), a pack of 100% cotton tees, and a roll of plastic wrap. That's it. The kit handles the soda ash question for you, and you can get a feel for the process before investing in individual supplies.
If you're ready to go deeper:
Add Procion MX powder dye, soda ash, nitrile gloves (better quality than kit gloves), precision tip squeeze bottles, and a set of plastic measuring containers. This setup gives you full control over your colours and ratios.
If you're doing this regularly:
Add urea to your dye water, Synthrapol for washing, a digital kitchen scale for dye powder, and a proper clamp set for geometric pattern work.
